Homegrown
Celebrating Australian poets, composers, stories and performers.
13.12.24
Bloomhouse Projects proudly presents Homegrown, a unique recital designed to celebrate the brilliance of Australian creatives. Taking place on Friday, 13th December, at the Banksia Room, Claremont Showgrounds, this intimate evening promises to captivate audiences with exceptional performances by internationally renowned artists and emerging local stars.
Homegrown will feature celebrated Australian expats who have earned accolades across the UK and Europe. Daniella Sicari (Soprano) returns to Perth to share some new music and collaborations that she has been working on between British and Australian creatives. She is joined by International pianist and recent addition to the WAAPA staff, Tonya Lemoh and the incredible Niamh Dell (oboe) who has recently returned to Perth, having spent the last few years being immersed in the contemporary classical world in the UK and Germany. As always, we invite an Emerging Artist to be part of each project and this year, our Diane & Dr Ken Collins AO award recipient is James Pinneri, who has shown interest in new works and also producing.
Together, these artists will perform a specially curated program showcasing the works of acclaimed Australian composers and poets including Margaret Sutherland, Ross Fiddes, Rod Moran, Chris Milbourn, Emma Jayakumar and more. The repertoire includes a variety of themes and stories which are relatable and some close to home.. literally.
Homegrown offers a rich cultural experience tailored to both classical music enthusiasts and new audiences. We hope you will maybe see a part of yourself or someone you know reflected in the text of these stories, and be proud to hear songs from Australians that very rarely get performed. For a majority of this programme, we will be hearing the WA premiere, and that is something that is a truly unique and shared experience.
Generously supported by the Town of Claremont and Zenith Music, Homegrown is more than a performance—it’s a celebration of community and creativity. The initiative reflects Bloomhouse Projects’ commitment to nurturing talent and strengthening Western Australia’s cultural identity.
This event has now ended.
Thank you
“this uniquely Australian classical concert offered me a level of catharsis that rivalled my monthly therapy sessions…
…Moving Home [by Pierre Flasse, text by Rod Moran] explored how the Australian accent affects compositional choices, a fascinating insight into composing for voice and language offering a fresh take on Australian identity within classical repertoire. The culmination of this collaborative experiment resulted in a charming yet haunting performance exploring themes of moving home, a sentiment that for many Australians is no doubt hitting hard at the moment. Like fate, the sound of a train whirring in the distance that closed the piece while not intended, felt quite symbolic of the poetry and music of what I’d just heard… This delightful collaboration between all three artists achieved its goal in promoting Australian identity, in an artform so traditionally European. Dare I say it, the Australian-accent actually managed to sound beautiful…
…Throughout this concert themes that were relatable to all of us continuously emerged, bringing a sense of comfort and connection to all…
…Homegrown brought a new and innovative way to use classical music to “activate” the community around us, allowing us to access live music performances in a seamless, easy-breezy, no-fuss experience. Bloomhouse excelled in their mission to highlight our local Australian talent, and continues to quietly champion our Australian artists. Four stars!”
